These beautiful glass reliquaries are filled with grains of Hin Khao San fossil rice which come from the Sukhothai region. And a larger grain has been carved into the shape of a stylized Buddha Phra Somdej by a forest monk Phra Siwali.
Fossil rice is, according to legend, rice from the Buddha's monk's bowl, which fell when the Buddha washed his bowl and multiplied and petrified over time.
Besides being a very sacred relic, this fossil rice is considered a powerful talisman of fertility for both crops and humans.
This sacred petrified rice is kept on one's altar as a relic, or placed in a Buddha statue or stupa to charge them.
